History
Founded in 1959
Nally & Gibson began operations on its current site in 1959 as a surface quarry. The operation was founded by Frank Hamilton Sr. and operated by Frank Hamilton, Jr.
The surface quarry method of mining involved open air blasting for stone to a depth of about 40 feet. During this time, Nally & Gibson provided the stone used to build sections of I-75, I-64, TMMK and the Georgetown by-pass. As the reserves of quality stone available near the surface were consumed, the transition to mining began with the construction of a slope to access quality stone that resides 300 feet below the surface.
Opened Mine
The mine project took two years to complete. In 1996, Nally & Gibson began production of stone from the mining operation. The mine was further developed in 1997 by moving the primary crusher underground and building the conveyor to move stone from the mine to the surface.
Nally & Gibson entered the paving market in 1990 and today operates its construction unit as Hamilton Hinkle Paving. In 1998, the company became a joint venture with Hinkle Contracting Company LLC. Hinkle Contracting was subsequently purchased by Summit Materials, Inc. a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE under the ticker of SUM.
Frank Hamilton Jr.
Frank Hamilton Jr. managed Nally & Gibson for more than 50 years. During that time, he served in many community and industry roles including the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, Kentucky Crushed Stone Association and the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors. He was instrumental in the development of the Cardome project. Mr. Hamilton was named Georgetown citizen of the year two times. In 2018, Richard Hamilton became the 3rd generation manager of Nally & Gibson.
